Best Warm Weather Destinations in March

Maldives

As March is the start of spring, bringing in the first heat of the year, let’s start with the warmer destinations. The Maldives is one of the best places to visit in March, with its many atolls and coral islands to explore and wonderful beaches. The Maldives is a destination to relax, that’s why the overwater bungalows are for! You can wake up in the morning and take a refreshing bath to start your day. Even so early in the year, its clear waters are fresh and inviting, so you can spend hours and hours there.

There is a lot of marine life also, you can see them from the bungalow, but diving is incredibly popular. You just need to rent some equipment and pick the best sites like Baa Atoll, Laccadive Atoll, and Vaavu Atoll. Fortunately, March offers great visibility for diving. So you don’t need to get too close to the manta rays, whale sharks, sea turtles, and the incredible variety of reef fish. A true wonder!

Bali, Indonesia

Heading off to a different continent, you’ll find a country full of traditions and history. You can visit incredibly visual places like the rice terraces, with an old irrigation system called Subak that’s been in use for the last 800 years! There are also many temples, some famous and well-recommended like the water temples of Pura Ulun Danu Bratan and Pura Taman Ayun. Just by entering, you’ll feel more at peace, as these buildings promote harmony between humans, nature, and deities through the Tri Hita Karana philosophy.

If you’re looking for a more dynamic stay, you can head to the southern peninsula, where you’ll find a big surfing community. With incredible beaches like Canggu and Uluwatu, both with consistent waves throughout the year. In March in particular, as is the end of the wet season, tourism hasn’t picked up yet, so you can get a more peaceful experience.

Bahamas

Keeping up with the best destinations to travel in March, you can also travel to the beautiful Bahamas! If you’re looking forward to spending time in white sand and clear waters, you can visit popular beaches like Pink Sands Beach on Harbour Island and Cable Beach near Nassau.

Even if March is part of the high season, you can relax and enjoy your free time. But accommodations and activities can cost a bit more, so better to make all the arrangements early. It is worth it, though, as the weather is perfect for swimming, warm and nice, and above all, you don’t have to worry about rain! If you go to the Nassau and Freeport area to spend time in the water, keep an eye out for the jet skis and nautical activities, as these beaches get quite crowded.

Best Cultural & Festival Destinations

India (Holi Festival)

As we already said, March is the start of spring, and for many cultures, this is a time of renewal and celebration. A time to nurture the souls and soil, and Holi, in India, is no exception. More people know it as “The festival of colors” and symbolizes the victory of good over evil as part of Hindu mythology, specifically the legend of Holika and Prahlad. It is in honor of Holika that the bonfire is lit on the night of the festival.

Of course, music and dance are the superstars, so get ready to sing, drum, and move your body. And don’t shy away from the colors, they mean joy and unity. Also, don’t miss the traditional foods that are prepared on that day. You can try sweet dishes like gujiya, a deep-fried dumpling filled with khoya (milk solids) and dried fruits, and malpua, a sweet and syrupy pancake. If you prefer savory snacks, you can try dahi vada, soft lentil dumplings, or mathri, a flaky and crunchy biscuit made with lots of spices.

Dublin, Ireland (St. Patrick’s Day)

On a different continent, on March 17, there is a different festival. It’s celebrated all around the world, but if you want to see the more authentic version, you have to go all the way to Ireland. St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in honor of Ireland’s patron saint, and it features a parade from Parnell Square to Cuffe Street. The event also includes thousands of participants, marching bands, and popular parades like the Macnas, “Turas Alf”, and the Pavee Point parade.

It is traditional to wear green, as that’s the color of the lush landscapes of the island, so don’t forget to pack your favorite green clothes. It will also help you remain invisible to the leprechauns, or so the legend says. But there’s more to do during the festivities! Like visiting the pub crawl in Temple Bar, known for its live traditional music sessions, or the Guinness Storehouse, with views of the city from its Gravity Bar. Another great place to visit is Gogarty’s and the Palace Bar for stout, lager, and cider!

Kyoto, Japan, Cherry Blossom Season Begins

Going back to Asia, you’ll find flowers blooming everywhere, especially in Japan, where the start of Spring means the start of the brief but beautiful cherry blossom season. The best time to see the trees all pink with the little flowers is during March, and there’s no better place to look at them than in the ancient capital, Kyoto. But you can learn a lot more in our article about Japan’s Cherry Blossom Season.

Just imagine yourself at a hanami picnic under the trees of Maruyama Park or Philosopher’s Path, where petals form “flower rafts” on waterways. You can also consider other settings, like the ancient temples Kiyomizu-dera and Ninna-ji, to see late-blooming Omuro-zakura cherry trees. At Daigoji Temple, the weeping cherry trees bloom earlier, while the gates of Konkai Komyo-ji contrast with the pink canopies. March is also a great time to take part in the traditional tea ceremonies in the Camelia Garden and enjoy the seasonal wagashi sweets.

Best Adventure Destinations in March

Yosemite National Park, USA

March is a great month to enjoy nature’s beauty, but what better way to enjoy it than directly going into the wild? So let’s venture into the Yosemite National Park! In mid-March, for example, you can enjoy the early blooming of wildflowers in the lower elevations, such as the Merced River Canyon. But there are other trails that you can take, and go to see the breathtaking Yosemite Falls and Bridalveil Falls.

While some locations might still be inaccessible because of the snow and rain so early in the spring, there are areas where you can hike. Lower Yosemite Falls, Cook’s Meadow, and Mirror Lake are all accessible as they’re in lower areas. Even then, you should check the road conditions before you go.

Moab, Utah (USA)

If you’re going to spend your March vacations hiking, there’s a different place in the U.S. that you’ll love. Moab, in Utah, is a hiker’s paradise, where you can find yourself surrounded by red rock canyons, natural arches, towering spires, and desert landscapes. It’s also very well-known among hikers as it is the base for visiting Arches and Canyonlands National Park.

Popular hikes you can do in March in Moab, Utah:

  • Delicate Arch: It’s a moderate one, perfect for starters. It’s only 3 miles round trip, and you’ll get breathtakingly beautiful views at sunset.

  • Devil Garden Trail: A bit more strenuous, but you can adapt it and do a shorter version. It passes through Landscape Arch and Double 0 Arch.

  • Grand View Point Trail: It’s an easy and flat 2-mile round trip that will take you to an incredible canyon with amazing views.

Great Ocean Road, Australia

Let’s go to a continent we’ve talked about nothing in this article, and another great place to travel to in March! In Australia, March is not spring, as we’re used to in the northern hemisphere, but actually the start of autumn, and one of the best seasons to explore the country. You can learn all about the weather in Australia and when to visit in another of our articles.

But let’s talk about the Great Ocean Road, one of the most spectacular coastal drives in the world. It covers a total of 243 km, going from Torquay to Allansford, with popular stops such as Bells Beach, Lorne, Apollo Bay, and Port Campbell. You can either do it all in one day or divide it and visit more of the charming Australian towns along the route.

Best City Breaks & Urban Getaways

Barcelona, Spain

But enough for the adventure for a little while, March is such a lovely month to enjoy the urban beauty of cities like Barcelona. Try to enjoy your time before the heat of the summer starts and the hordes of tourists arrive. If you want ideas for a full itinerary, check our article about how to spend 3 wonderful days in Barcelona!

So let’s focus on what we all love: the mix between delicious food and fun in the evenings. Barcelona is all about the tapas culture, accessible through gastronomic routes and local restaurants. In March, the calcots are in season, and you can try them grilled with meat, or the bunyols de quaresma, delicious dough balls fried and filled with cream.

As for events, you arrived just in time to join the Falles de la Sagrada Familia, a local version of Valencia’s Las Fallas. It includes fireworks, traditional music, and bonfires! But there’s also the Carnaval, with parades, costumes and masquerades, and of course, lots and lots of traditional Catalan sweets to try.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Crossing the whole Atlantic again, but this time on route to the far South. An Argentinian March night is still warm, even when winter is coming soon, and the tango music is lively and calls you. You can enjoy historic places like La Ventana in San Telmo and the Café de los Angelitos, where you’ll have magical nights you won’t forget. Even if you’ve never danced tango before, don’t worry! Milongas like La Catedral Club offer classes and informal dances for you to learn your first steps.

There are also other places you might like to visit, such as the Teatro Colón, among the best opera houses in the world, or the Mercado de San Telmo for buying antiques and handicrafts you can get as souvenirs. If you’re looking for something unique, get a mate and a bombilla, and try the classic drink at your own home, or a poncho to be stylish and cozy the next winter.

Final Thoughts

March is one of the best months you can choose to travel the world, as it’s the very start of spring in the northern hemisphere and autumn in the southern hemisphere. So no matter where you decide to go, you’ll get excellent weather, ideal for exploring cities and adventuring into nature.
